Project 15. Investigating Data Use
- Goal
- Realize the first study about ODP data use. It should cover (1) a typology of data use including most important characteristics (2) an overview of statistics on data use, based on the content of the data use categories and estimates on not-registered use (3) recommendations what data use should be encouraged (4) recommendations how to handle the listings in the data user categories to make regular monitoring possible (5) recommendations for further research (e.g. a data user survey) and PR activities.

- Responsibilities of Project Leader
- Define what can be done inside the limits of a first study (e.g. trying to check all existing data users, or even all data users listed in ODP, one by one, would be far too much: ways to produce estimates need to be found), and modify the draft accordingly.
- Lead the discussion and research activities.
- Compile the results into a report.

- Contribute to the discussion and research activities.
- Help to compile a report.
- Write a brief overview article for the public.
- Responsibilities of Project Sponsor
- Help the project leader define the limits of the study.
- Forward the results to AOL.
- Measures of Success
- A detailed report of the findings, to be handed to the editor community and to be forwarded to AOL.
- A brief overview article for the public, to be published via the newsletter or RZ.

- 15 April 2006: new category created for research papers which make use of ODP data, and related material added to the report.
- 13 May 2006: report updated on statistics of ODP use.
- 22 May 2006: draft recommendations for data use to be encouraged written. Comments invited.
- 30 June 2006: report complete. Comments invited.
- 9 July 2006: contributions by chris2001 incorporated.
- 11 Jul 2006: report officially published internally at http://research.dmoz.org/editors/publish/chris2001/odp_research/investigating_data_use.html
- 17 July 2006: draft created of the overview article for the public.
- 3 August 2006: final text of the overview article agreed.
- 6 August 2006: article published in the ODP Newsletter. Project complete.
