Project 2. ODP Glossary

Goal

The goal of this project is to educate editors concerning the use of terms commonly encountered in the Open Directory Project. Understanding of a shared vocabulary is key to effective communication. The English and French versions of our current glossary are located at http://dmoz.org/erz/glossary.html . We'll be looking at how to extend those versions, and how to facilitate creating versions in other languages.

The "completion date" reflects the aimed-for timing to have a new infrastructure in place; new entry development and translation will still be occurring after that date.

Responsibilities of Project Leader

• Improve the quantity and quality of glossary entries.
• Expand the glossary into other languages, with the help of editors fluent in other languages.
• Coordinate the translation of glossary entries with translators.

Responsibilities of Project Team Members

• Suggest new terms and definitions.
• Proof existing definitions for consistency and correctness.
• Translate terminology to non-English glossaries. (The project team should include some editors who can translate the glossary into languages other than English.)

Responsibilities of Project Sponsor

• Ensure that glossary updates get published in a timely manner.

Measures of Success

• Currently, the English glossary consists of ~ 152 entries, while the French glossary consists of ~ 88 entries. The success of this project will largely be measured on increasing the size of these glossaries (while maintaining quality definitions) and extending the glossary into other languages.

Progress Log

• Work has started on several World/Language glossaries, and new entries have been proposed for the English glossary. The Italian glossary is now integrated into the dmoz.org environment.
